    Comparatively, there is very little left of the former hilltop castle, namely a rather toothless-looking, completely isolated castle wall remnant. This is made of red sandstone, has two window openings, is around 10 meters high and three meters wide. It probably belonged to an 11 × 17 meter building on a rock base in a central location within the castle complex. The roots of the castle go back to the High Middle Ages. It was probably built in the 12th or 13th century by the Counts of Dassel and initially served as a hunting lodge. It later fell to the Guelphs and was the administrative headquarters of the Lauenberg district. From the mountain spur you had a good view of the trade routes running through the valley. In the 16th century the complex was abandoned and fell into disrepair. It was not until 1907 that measures were taken to preserve the remains.
