Grand lake in the Valle dei Laghi valley, about 20 km from Trento, in the Sarche plain, forms a coherent basin with the lake of Santa Massenza. Lake Toblino is surrounded by Monte Casale, the foothills of Mount Gazza-Paganella in the north and Monte Bondone in the south. It was created by the accumulation of flood material. Lake Toblino is located at 245 m above sea level, approx. 15 km west of Trento at the end of the Sarca Valley, or “Valle dei Laghi” (Valley of the Lakes), as it is also called because of the variety of lakes. This lake was created by erosion and sedimentation carried over time by the Sarca River into the valley. The transparency that the lake used to have has largely been lost, as the cloudy glacier water is fed to it today. Nevertheless, the lake is considered to be one of the most romantic in Trentino - it impresses above all with its location, surrounded by rolling hills, dense forests, vineyards and orchards, cypress avenues and the rock face of the Piccolo Dain (971 m).

The mild climate around the lake favors the predominantly Mediterranean vegetation - lemons, rosemary, laurel and olive trees thrive here. Numerous water birds and fish species also find their home here. Due to the diversity of flora and fauna, the area around the lake is protected as a biotope. The dreamy medieval landmark of the lake rises on a peninsula in the lake, which can be reached on foot via a dam: Castel Toblino, a tower-rich moated castle from the 12th century Prince-Bishop Madruzzo converted into a summer residence. Today it is used as a restaurant and is only accessible to its visitors. Treat yourself to a cappuccino on the sun terrace and enjoy the wonderful view of the picturesque lake.
