The church in Gleschendorf stands out due to the special shape of its church tower. A worthwhile sight in this village in the hinterland of Scharbeutz.

The Geschendorf church, the oldest part of which is the massive fieldstone tower, was first mentioned in 1259. It stands in the center of the village on the church green.
The walls of the massive church tower, which is up to 27 m high, are built from bricked fieldstones on a fieldstone foundation, with the exception of a few brick surfaces, and are up to 2.75 m thick. The steep, shingled roof of the tower has a square floor plan in the lower third, which then turns into an octagonal part.
The nave with apse, built from bricks on a foundation of hewn natural stone and covered with roof tiles, dates from 1864. The nave, which was also originally built from fieldstones, was demolished in 1863 due to severe dilapidation. A chapel was later added to the nave on the south side and a sacristy on the north side.

The Gleschendorf fieldstone church does not belong to the group of Vicelin churches, which are named after the Vicelin who was appointed Bishop of Oldenburg in 1149. In fact, the Gleschendorf church is probably a few decades younger than the square tower design known from the cities became popular (the Vicelin churches, on the other hand, have round towers like in Ratekau). With Otto Jarchau, it can be assumed that the church in Gleschendorf was built around 1200.

Also unlike the Vicelin churches, in Gleschendorf the fieldstones were not randomly thrown into a formwork and then filled with mortar, but sorted, placed in layers and the cavities then filled with Segeberg lime mortar. In the 1950s, shotcrete was pressed into the cavities of the fieldstone tower to stabilize the masonry. This was in line with the latest knowledge at the time, but it subsequently led to the shotcrete reacting with the mortar, increasing its volume and threatening to burst the fieldstone walls. This required extensive tower restoration between 1997 and 2003.

There is a small bell on the front side of the tower roof, and there are tower clocks on both sides. The church's chimes consist of three bronze bells from 1563 and 1611, which had to be handed over in 1944 during the Second World War and were taken to Hamburg to be melted down, but were preserved and returned soon after the end of the war with great sympathy from the population.
