The early medieval Neidstein Castle belonged to the Lords of Neidstein in the 12th century.
A Neupert von Nitstein, Ministerale of the Counts of Sulzbach, is mentioned in a document from 1119.
Around 1300 the last male offspring of this tribe died.
As early as 1297, Neidstein came into the possession of Walter Schenk von Reicheneck, who had married a sister of the last Neidsteiner.
In 1326 Dietrich von Parsberg sold the castle to King Ludwig the Bavarian. Through the Treaty of Pavia (1329) Neidstein came to the Palatinate and in 1338 to Count Palatine Rudolf.
In 1349 he pledged it to King Charles IV of Bohemia.
In 1373 it was exchanged with the Wittelsbach Elector Otto von Brandenburg, who employed Hans Steinlinger as caretaker.
After that, Neidstein was pledged three more times.
Most recently in 1466 by Duke Ludwig to Hans Brandter (Brand), whose descendants have owned the castle uninterruptedly to this day.
