    Construction began in 1658 on the ruins of an older 13th-century church, designed by G.B. Ghisio, one of the greatest exponents of Ligurian Baroque. The third-century cinerary urn preserved in the Basilica supports the hypothesis of a settlement dating back to Roman times. Inside are the relics of Saint Margaret of Antioch, the city's patron saint. The patron saint's feast day is July 20th.

    The relics arrived as a gift from a Canon of Valencia in Spain who, on the ship "San Lazzaro" bound for his homeland, noticed during a stopover in Genoa that the casket containing them had opened. A traveling haberdasher, having noticed the event, spread the news among his fellow citizens and convinced the Canon to donate it on July 12, 1635. On May 5, 1724, the Capuchin Father Alessandro da Genova also donated the precious blood of Santa Margherita (from "Documented History of the Parish of Santa Margherita" by Monsignor F. Rollino and A. Ferretto - Genoa 1907).

    The Sanctuary takes its name from Our Lady of the Rose, a depiction of Mary holding the Baby Jesus in her left arm and a rose in her right hand, dating back to the Middle Ages, when some sailors brought the Marian image to the village of San Margherita. The cult of Our Lady of the Rose was consolidated on May 4, 1672, when, during work on the old church, an amphora containing clear, scented water was discovered beneath the altar of Santa Maria della Rosa. The rediscovered water proved to have miraculous powers. The healings attracted numerous faithful, and the statue of the Madonna, placed in a marble niche built with the help of sailors from San Margherita, was carried in procession throughout the town ("Historical Memories of the Sanctuary" by Father Fedele Luxardo, 1872). The feast is still celebrated today on the fifth Sunday after Easter, and during Mass, the roses brought by the residents are blessed. Numerous works of great artistic value are housed in the Basilica.
