From 1548 to 1559, a boiler lock was built in Rathenow, thus guaranteeing a continuous passage for shipping. At the same location, the first city lock was built in 1732 as a chamber lock.
By the end of the 19th century, the performance of the old lock was no longer sufficient. This led to the construction of an artificial shipping canal with a 220-meter lock, the Rathenow main lock.
