The complex from the 13th century, which was expanded into a palace on the foundations of the Meierhof of the old castle in the 16th century, takes its name from one of the oldest and most important noble families in Styria, the Lords of Stubenberg.

Up to the 17th century they provided five governors and, when threatened from the east, had to muster more horses and riflemen than the Archbishop of Salzburg.

Since the Counts of Stubenberg turned to Protestant doctrine in the 16th century and Georg Sigmund emigrated to Bavaria with most of the family fortune, the family lost its influence.

From 1925 to 1979 the St. Josefs monastery of the Franciscan Sisters was established in Stubenberg Castle. In 1980 it came into the private ownership of the Margaritha family and Dr. Frank Schleicher and since 1981 the romantic arcade courtyard and the gallery hall have been available for cultural events.

The recently restored Stubenberg Castle welcomes you to the hilly East Styrian landscape. It is now a gallery, arcade theater, concert hall and hostel all at the same time.
