St. Ulrich's Church in Rastede is almost 1,000 years old.
In 1059 it was donated by the count couple Huno and his wife Willa.

Originally, the church may have consisted exclusively of granite blocks and boulders. Over time, however, it was expanded, rebuilt and repaired several times, so that today the brick characterizes the building. This is especially true of the bell tower, which has collapsed several times throughout its history. Southwest in front of the church, the free-standing gate tower with stepped gables was built in the 15th century, in which three bells 1498, 1522 and 1992 hang.
In the extreme north-west of Germany, people liked to build the bell tower a little away from the main building. The old master builders thus prevented the chiming of the bell from affecting the stability of the entire church building when the subsoil was often not entirely stable.

Today, access to the St. Ulrich's Church is gained through the tower room. Inside is the lid of the sarcophagus of Count Moritz II of Oldenburg. He died in 1420 and was buried in the local monastery church as a special friend of the Rastede monastery. After its demolition, the grave slab was transferred to the crypt of St. Ulrich's Church in 1757. It has been at its current location since 1959. The resemblance of the sandstone figure of the Count to the Bremen Roland is striking. They probably both come from the same workshop.

The oldest piece of equipment in the church is the Romanesque baptismal font from 1250. It was probably carved out of Baumberg sandstone and modeled in an East Frisian workshop (source: rastede-touristik.de/freizeit-erleben/poi/st-ulrichs -church/)

The crypt below the St. Ulrich's Church is a real special feature, since such a building is otherwise only known from the largest important churches in the region (e.g. in Bremen or Hildesheim).
It dates from the early 11th century and was built as a lower church for the count's donor couple. Columns with cube capitals support the old groined vault made of fieldstone. While the capitals and the bases of the columns were hewn from sandstone, the shafts of the columns are made of plaster stucco, a material that was already widely used in the Middle Ages. This subterranean room, which was owned by the sovereign until 1762, served as a private prayer chapel for centuries. Burials were not carried out here until the 18th century. In particular, the large sandstone sarcophagus of Princess Sophie Eleonore von Schleswig-Holstein-Beck, who lived at Rastede Castle for 43 years and was buried in the crypt, can be admired here (source: rastede-touristik.de/freizeit -experience/poi/st-ulrichs-kirche/).
