The new graduation tower was built in 1997 to commemorate the city's 750th anniversary, south of the old graduation path. The thorn walls are eight meters high over a length of 50 meters, and the built-in stair tower, which is not open to the public, is 14 meters high.

The system is fed with brine water from the nearby "Neuer Sprudel" spring. The brine is pumped into a large channel on the graduation tower, which in turn feeds the channels on the long sides above the thorn hedge.

The brine then trickles from the notches and taps in these channels into the thorns. The falling drops are crushed (aerosols) so that they can be used for therapeutic open-air inhalation. Graduation means gradually increasing the brine content of the water by letting it drain several times.
