Hollins Cross is an important junction on the spectacular Great Ridge, which separates the Vales of Edale and Castleton in the Peak District. A low col at 1,286 feet (392 m), it is the easiest crossing point along the length of the Ridge and several paths meet here on their way between the valleys or towards the high points of Mam Tor and Lose Hill.
The Great Ridge is a very popular objective, boasting wonderful views in every direction. From Hollins Cross, the superb path to Mam Tor, one of the national park’s most charismatic hills, ventures to the southwest. To the east are Barker Bank, Back Tor and Lose Hill, where the Ridge terminates.
An important and historic crossing point on the spectacular Great Ridge
Hollins Cross has long connected the communities of Castleton and Edale. Before a church was constructed in Edale, the path to Hollins Cross was used as a coffin route, as folk from the village would bring their dead over the pass to bury them in Castleton.
These days, it’s mostly hillwalkers who use the pass, enjoying some of the Peak District’s most scenic hiking routes. The Great Ridge rewards with an extensive panorama, with Kinder Scout’s cloughs and plateau to the north and the beautiful Hope Valley to the east, with Win Hill and the region’s famous gritstone edges beyond.
Edale and Castleton both have a range of accommodation options and are obvious starting points for adventures to Hollins Cross and the Great Ridge.

Hollins Cross is a col with spectacular panoramic views. There are loads of great trails around here, especially via the Great Ridge to Mam Tor. It can get very busy at popular times/when the weather is great, so choose your moment.

I’ve just been reading some of the comments. One particular comment recommends walking on the grass verge at the side of the steps leading to the summit of Mam Tor! Doesn't the person posting this realise that the Forestry Commission, the countryside commission, the National Trust and hundreds of volunteers spend tens of thousands of pounds repairing the erosion caused by the thousands of feet that tread these beautiful landscapes we have in Yorkshire and Derbyshire? The steps the writer refers to are the result of said erosion. Walking at the side of the steps and encouraging others to do the same is totally wrong! In doing so they add to the never ending cost of repairing the damage caused by ill advised well wishers. Gripe over.

Half way point along the great ridge really between Mam Tor and Lose Hill. Superb vantage point...but the whole ridge is really. Super little place to be with great views on a sunny day.
