"Oh, it's scary to walk across the moor ..." once wrote the writer Annette von Droste-Hülshoff in her poem "The Boy in the Moor". And although humans have pushed the moorland ever further back over the centuries, they have lost none of their fascination to this day.

On the border between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, Wittmoor is one of the few raised bogs in northern Germany. The almost eerie silence, the dark moor lake and the stumps of dead birch trees that protrude from the water provide a pleasant feeling of shiver while walking, especially on dim winter or autumn afternoons.
