First mentioned in a document in 1220, Morsbroich was the seat of the Teutonic Knight Order from 1619 to 1803. In 1774 Ignaz von Roll had the castle demolished and replaced with a baroque palace, and that was the first place in North Rhine-Westphalia where contemporary art moved in after the war. Since then there have been important exhibitions by international artists, and an impressive collection of around 400 paintings and sculptures as well as 5,000 graphic works have been put together. So it's no wonder that the International Art Critics Association chose the house as “Museum of the Year 2009”.
