    PYF Test Route.
This is a Strava segment and a personal fitness test of mine from the swing gate at Pontardaff Lay-by to the summit post that I have done for the last forty years. It is 3.2km to the top of PYF with 460m of height gain.

These are my guideline test times from the gate to the summit with a 3-5kg sack.
15 mins - You are a physical mutant.
20 mins - You are exceptionally fit and bordering on genetic mutation.
25 mins - You are very fit, train hard and love pain.
30 mins - You are fit, smile and wave to others in an annoying way when going past them.
35 mins - You are fit, try to smile but can't be bothered to wave at others.
40 mins - You are pretty fit but you grimace a lot.
45 mins - You are doing okay but mumble a lot during bouts of pain.
50 mins - You are maybe suffering from the Stella from last night.
55 mins - You are definitely suffering from the Stella.
60 mins - Your best days are behind you.

    Tonight I did it in 40min 34secs with a 5kg sack...there was a lot of grimacing!

This is one of the most accessible routes to the summit way to Pen-Y-Fan summit from Pont Yr Daf car park where you can get an "I climbed Pen-Y-Fan" medal when you finish it. You also get to see a lot of wild horses roaming around. The car parks get very busy so if you’re planning to do this route it’s a good idea to get there early or go up for the evening, especially on a good day. Park up then follow head to the end of the carpark, head through the gate and over the bridge. There’s only one route and it’s a clear path. It’s a steady climb up until you reach Bwlch Duwynt – keep going though as the view when you reach this point is 100% worth it. The landscape opens out with Corn Du, Pen Y Fan and Cribyn to your left and Graig Fan Ddu on the right (incidentally another great route, described below). You have two options from here – go up Corn Du (873m), which is a short scramble up onto the summit, or you can take the path to the right of the summit, which is a path cutting around to Pen Y Fan. It’s a level path before a gentle slope up to the flat plateau summit of Pen Y Fan. You can return by the same path or the path below.

The name Pen y Fan roughly translates as Top Spot. That’s top as in highest, but there’s no doubt it’s inspiring in other ways. At the summit, walkers perch on the cairn to grab a selfie. The bragging rights are not to be sniffed at – this is, after all, the highest point in southern Britain, with Mid Wales swirling around it like a carpet of green.

Pen y Fan is just one of several walkable peaks and ridges in the central Beacons. By following an exhilarating 11 mile circuit from the Storey Arms, you can also take in Corn Du (873m) and Cribyn (795m). 'I wouldn’t dream of missing out on Corn Du when I’m climbing Pen y Fan,' says Darren James, a veteran walker who’s pausing for a swig of coffee on Corn Du’s crowning plateau. 'Both summits were used as burial places in the Bronze Age, so there’s something mystical about them.'
