The Großvenediger is a heavily glaciated main summit in the Hohe Tauern and with 3657m one of the highest mountains in Austria. The world-famous Majästätt, as the Großvenediger is often called, can be climbed via several routes from Salzburg or Osttirol. Technically, the tours are less difficult, but all routes lead over heavily glaciated terrain, which is not to be underestimated due to the risk of splits.

At 3657 m, the Großvenediger is the highest mountain in the Venediger group in the Hohe Tauern and in Salzburg. It lies directly on the main Alpine ridge on the border between East Tyrol and Salzburg. Its appearance is characterized by its strong glaciation on all sides, including the Schlatenkees and Obersulzbachkees, with the individual glaciers separated by a total of four extremely distinctive ridges. During the first ascent, Ignaz von Kürsinger coined the term "world-old majesty". The summit itself has already completely melted away as a result of the glacier retreat of recent decades and has lost a lot of height; in the 1980s it was measured at 3674 m.

The name Großvenediger was first mentioned in a border inspection report in 1797. Until then, the mountain had been called Stützerkopf. The origin of the name is unclear, but it is said to be derived from passing traders, the Venedigers. The distant view as far as Venice is also an often mentioned but refuted theory.
