An impressive monastery, built in 1245 in the brick Gothic style. The inner courtyard houses a restaurant, other cultural offerings within the building, and a kindergarten. Outside the monastery is the water-filled, rectangular monastery moat. The bike path runs along the moat, and there are several information panels along the way that provide information about the local flora and fauna.

This section is now used as a branch of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum for summer art exhibitions. Other single-storey buildings surround the quadrangular courtyard to the east and south, outlines of the cloister are indicated by stone markings. The western part is no longer preserved. The western front is designed as a stepped gable. Excavations have indicated in 1965 that the original construction was substantially enlarged by 1320. The entire complex is surrounded by a moat and earth walls.

Cismar Abbey is a large medieval abbey in East Holstein, impressive simply for its unique historical atmosphere. It is also one of the most important buildings of Lübeck's early Gothic style, with one of the oldest preserved winged altars in existence.

There are hiking trails around the monastery, some of which lead to the Baltic Sea, just five kilometers away.

Cismar Abbey was founded in 1231. It is considered the largest and most important medieval abbey in East Holstein, having been used in a variety of ways over the centuries – initially as a monastery, later as a bailiff's residence, a youth hostel, and a refugee camp, among other things. Since 1999, the monastery has been part of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Gottorf Castle Foundation. Despite this long and eventful history, significant parts of the complex have survived to this day.

Cismar Abbey is one of the most important buildings of Lübeck's early Gothic style and of North German brick architecture. This meant, among other things, that the usual large sandstone blocks were abandoned – because they didn't exist here – and instead, much smaller red bricks were used.
