      Border marker 51

      In 1963, an incident occurred at the former inner-German border near Altenburschla. Following a friendly conversation between East German border guards and an international youth group visiting the border on the Mainzer Köpfe hills, the two border guards were injured by mines. Since no help could be reached on the East German side, three soldiers—two West Germans and a Briton—risked their lives to pull the seriously injured men across the border. After a hospital stay in Eschwege, the soldiers were able to return to East Germany. The incident took place two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall and attracted considerable attention from the domestic and international press.
