    In the Rococo era, the builder Duke Carl Eugen needed not only other stately buildings for his palace "La Solitude" but also extensive and pompous gardens, the so-called "pleasure gardens". They were laid out between 1764 and 1772 and, when the work was completed, were roughly the size of the Stuttgart city center at the time.
