In 1907 the Hesse family moved into their own house in Gaienhofen, after having rented a farmhouse for several years.

In the period up to 1912, Hermann Hesse laid out a large self-sufficient garden with berries, vegetables and fruit trees as well as numerous flower borders on the meadow around his house. It is the first and only garden that he designed and laid out himself from scratch
