The Marienkapelle is located in the middle of the town of Stiepelse, a few hundred meters northeast of the Elbe and is directly on the Elbe cycle path.
The chapel grounds are surrounded by a brick wall. There are a few graves on the grounds.

There was probably a chapel in Stiepelse as early as 1206. The first documented mention of a chapel in the town dates back to 1668.

The direct predecessor building was destroyed in a fire. The current chapel building was then built between 1852 and 1853. It was inaugurated on the 3rd Advent of 1853.

In 1913 the chapel was closed by the police due to the lack of stability of the roof beams. In 1945 it was damaged by gunfire at the end of the Second World War.

The chapel belonged to the Barskamp parish until Germany was divided. This is because the two places were on the same side of the Elbe before the changes made by humans to the course of the Elbe from the 13th century onwards.

The chapel was completely renovated between 1992 and 1997. In the process, the original pulpit altar was reconstructed.

There are two church bells from 1994 from the Bachert bell foundry and a striking bell in the roof turret. The larger of the two bells has a diameter of 68.7 centimeters, weighs 177 kilograms and strikes a pitch of d''-2. The smaller has a diameter of 55.2 centimeters, weighs 109 kilograms and strikes a pitch of f''-1. The striking bell was cast in the 15th century and has a pitch of des''-6.
