The first documented mention of the village of Leisenberg dates back to 1281. The former village probably covered an area of 6.5 hectares. Old documents show that the village had around six full farms and 13 manor farms, with one full farm having to cultivate around 20 hectares and one manor farm around 10 hectares. The last mention of Leisenberg as an existing village was in 1449. The village became deserted after 1460, and property registers from the Katlenburg monastery show that Leisenberg was deserted by 1513. Some of the residents probably moved to the larger and better fortified Gillersheim, which also belonged to the Katlenburg monastery and had mostly better soil for farming. However, there are also records of several new residents from Göttingen and Northeim who named themselves after Leisenberg from the 14th century. Despite the village being abandoned, the church was still occupied in 1519/20 and it was not until 1618 that the bells, an iron-clad box and a chalice were removed from the church.

Regular visitors to this ruin are definitely wild boars, as the disturbed ground around the ruin shows. 🐗
The place has an interesting atmosphere, especially when you consider that people were still coming and going here about 500 years ago.
