      Cherries have been grown in the favorable climate of the Middle Rhine Valley for centuries, originally only for personal consumption. Wine played a major economic role here - until phylloxera arrived at the end of the 19th century and almost completely wiped out wine growing. At that time, many winemakers switched to fruit growing - including here in Filsen.
      The Middle Rhine cherry became a sought-after product throughout Germany. There was an overwhelming variety of tasty local varieties such as the "Perle von Filsen", the "Boppard Krächer" and the "Geisepitter". Cherry cultivation flourished on the Middle Rhine until the middle of the 20th century, when cheaper foreign imports displaced the local varieties.
      To ensure that the delicious Middle Rhine cherries do not disappear completely, the Rhineland-Palatinate Rural Land Management launched the Middle Rhine Cherry Project a few years ago.
      As part of this project, a cherry trail was created in Filsen. Above the village, along a circular path, there are now over 80 types of cherries that are typical of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The path offers fantastic views of the fascinating landscape of the UNESCO cultural heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley with the Rhine loop, the town of Boppard, the vineyards of the Bopparder Hamm and - high up in the Filsen forest - the small Marienkapelle. In spring, hikers roam through a sea of white flowers, while at harvest time they can snack on the delicious fruits straight from the tree.
