The village of Hummstadt - as Hohenstadt was once called with its castle and pilgrimage church - was first mentioned in 1147.
The oldest baroque hedge garden in Europe belongs to the palace. With its avenue of spherical trees and the small pleasure palace, it is reminiscent of the large gardens in Vienna, Paris or Versailles.
The castle and pilgrimage church Hohenstadt with its late Gothic Madonna, completed in 1711 by Chr. Jochum in the 'Vorarlberg Baroque' style, is one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings of this type.

Hohenstadt Castle, owned by the Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden family, was given its current baroque form around 1760 after two alterations in the 16th and 17th centuries. It has exposed staircases with unusually flat steps on the floors, a special type of staircase that can otherwise only be found in the Würzburg Residence. The building is privately owned and usually not open to the public; During the Patricius Festival in March, visitors are occasionally granted access to the interior of the palace. The building served as a backdrop and location for the German film production "The Red Baron".

The castle and pilgrimage church Hohenstadt was built in just four years from 1707 to 1711 under Wilhelm Adelmann. It is considered one of the most beautiful baroque buildings in the "Vorarlberg Baroque".
