1674: Master Detlef Schwar built the overshot water mill in Ovelgönne on the Ketzenbeek; an existing dammed fish pond served as a mill pond.
Due to the lordly property rights, Schwar had to pay rent for his mill.
1758/1759: The mill floor, the floor in the living room, the stairs to the mill floor and the attic, and the wooden wall on the water wheel side were renovated.
Around 1800: The thatched half-timbered building was extended by one bay to the west to enlarge the living area.
Middle of the 19th century: A chimney was installed and minor repairs were made to the outside wall of the living area.
The year 1855: on the mill drum indicates the time of a major overhaul of the mill. This included the partial conversion from wood to metal: the new water wheel and channel were made of iron, and an additional drive for a threshing machine outside the mill was given iron gears.
up to around 1900: the wood-clad half-timbered construction of the east wall at the water wheel was replaced by a solid brick wall.
1872: the lordly ownership ended: Heinrich Peters, the great-grandfather of the last mill owner, bought the mill.

1940s: in order to accommodate the increasing residential use of the mill, a wall was built to separate the mill from the former work area. 1984: The Buxtehude City Council decided to purchase the Ovelgönne watermill.
Autumn 1986: The renovation work was completed. The Ovelgönne watermill was opened to the public as a village community center and as a cultural monument.
