Since 1554, the ferry connection across the 108 m wide Eider between Erfde-Bargen and Delve-Schwienhusen has been of both economic and cultural importance. In 1961, this connection was abolished by the construction of a road bridge near Pahlen.

On May 26, 2001, the new "Bargen Ferry" was christened and put into operation during an inauguration ceremony. Following the motto "Ferry connects people and regions," the old connection between Dithmarschen and Stapelholm was restored.
