As a result of a heavy air raid on December 16, 1944, St. Mary's Church burned down to its foundations, and the interior was engulfed in flames. Immediately after the war, the energetic pastor Wilhelm Ochse began the rapid reconstruction. During the repairs, the church received a massive neo-baroque round-arch vault instead of the burned wooden rib vault. The baroque tower dome that characterizes the cityscape was reconstructed. During the renovation in 1973, the breakthrough of the large window and the main portal on the south side, which Brother Hülse had already planned, was realized.
The chancel was also redesigned to be timeless and correspond to the renewed understanding of liturgy of the Second Vatican Council.
