The Schönheiderhammer pre-dam is a small dam that holds back sediment and suspended matter from the Zwickauer Mulde before the water reaches the main Eibenstock dam. The 36m high dam has now been opened to the public; a few years ago it was completely closed. There is a tunnel in the water on the side that can be seen clearly at low water levels; the railway used to run through there to Aue. Due to the sediment retention, the inlet is dredged every few years, and a large part of the water is drained off.
