The friars of the Abbey of Averbode belong to the order founded by Saint Norbert. That is why they are called Norbertines. But they still have some names. For example, Premonstratensians refers to Prémontré, the French town where the order was founded in 1121. Their white habit explains the nickname witheren.

Norbertines, like Jesus Christ, want to spread the gospel, so that people can draw courage and confidence from it. But they also want to live up to that gospel together, as fellow brothers in a praying and serving community.
