The Hans-Heinz-Schanze in Johanngeorgenstadt was the first large hill in Germany and was named after the initiator of ski jumping in Johanngeorgenstadt, who fell in World War I. His brother Guido, a local furniture manufacturer, financed and built the ski jump in 1928/29. Walter Glaß from Klingenthal set the first hill record in 1929 with 68 m. A year later, the future Norwegian Olympic champion Birger Ruud achieved 70 m! In the end, the record was 80 m, held by the local Herbert Queck. The largest German ski jump at that time had a 42 m high inrun tower with a 110 m inrun length, but in 1956 the now dilapidated wooden structure collapsed.
The new Erzgebirgsschanze K75 was built at the same place in Lehmergrund from 1960 to '62. Incidentally, the massive reinforced concrete structure was co-financed from profits from the GDR's state-run Lotto Toto competition. In the middle of the 60s the junior hills were built, whereby in 1978 the K36 received a hydraulically adjustable inrun (Friday tower). The junior hills are in operation and were renovated in 1993/94 and covered with plastic mattings. In 2005 all four small hills got a porcelain inrun track and new plastic mattings.
The large Erzgebirgsschanze has not been used to jump since the beginning of the 21st century, because it no longer meets the modern profile and safety requirements. In the meantime, the dismantling of the venerable, large Erzegbirgsschanze has already begun. Nonetheless, the WSV Johanngeorgenstadt is still very active in promoting the Nordic youngsters, so that jumpers like Sven Hannawald or Nordic combined athlete Björn Kircheisen can emerge from the club again in the future.
