Pedreira de Diabás Hessel

At the end of the 19th century, large and profitable quarries were opened up in the Lahn-Dill mountains. Diabase ("Hinterland greenstone") is still mined here today. This material has been and is still being used to make ashlars, tombstones, paving stones, chippings, gravel, floor panels and facade cladding. The Hessel quarry was put into operation in the 1880s. Up until the 1950s, the basements of the houses in Oberhörlen were mostly made of stone from the quarry. Diabase from the quarry was also used very early on for public buildings, such as the school built in 1901 and the vicarage from 1913. The quarry was abandoned towards the end of the 1950s. The quarry was recently completely cleared and fitted with a new railing.
