From 1936 the Brönnhof estate was used militarily, initially by the Wehrmacht and, for a few years after the war, by the U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt as a training site, which is connected to the Ledward Barracks by the approximately 10 km long "Heeresstraße". The Brönnhof was with 26 km² [4] the third largest training area of the US Army in Europe, which was recently also occasionally used by the Bundeswehr in preparation for foreign missions.

The core of the training area, with Camp Robertson and 104 buildings, [1] was on the clearing island. The much larger surrounding area was still subject to forest management, was also used by the US troops and was also part of the training area. However, in contrast to the core, this area could be entered at your own risk, e.g. for hikers.

As a result of the complete withdrawal of US troops from Schweinfurt in 2014, the Brönnhof is no longer used as a training area, which increases the local recreational and ecological value in this scenic, urban region.
