Hiking in the Pentland Hills to the south of Edinburgh is always a fairly marvellous experience but summiting Scald Law, the highest point, is the icing on the cake. Trails crisscross the hills and you can make your walk as short or as long as you like, depending on your mood, energy levels and the weather. With a summit trig point at 1,900 feet (579 m), clear days provide astounding views as well.
You’ll find a visitor centre, toilets and parking just off the A702 to the north east and this is a popular place to start, with plenty of paths weaving into the hills. Approaching from this angle gives you the opportunity to walk over several other hills before reaching the summit itself.
Undulating hills and gorgeous views throughout the year
Hikes up Scald Law place you on the very edge of the Pentland Hills, making for impressive and contrasting views as you ascend. East, marvel at the relatively flat, patchwork land before the Moorfoot Hills rise in the distance. West, admire the rounded shapes of the other Pentlands rolling south west to north east.
The Pentland Hills are most grassy and paths range from gravel to grass with pathless sections. Rambling over the hills won’t see you encounter anything technical or particularly challenging and instead, the weather is what you might want to watch out for. Hiking trails to Scald Law can be bathed in sunshine with far reaching views or shrouded in cloud and drizzle to keep you company.
Hike to this summit at any time of year, keeping an eye on changeable weather. Skylarks, grouse and red deer all call this area their home so keep an eye out and you might be lucky. Find cafes, restaurants and accommodation in the surrounding area and, of course, Edinburgh.

Highest point in the Pentlands and certainly expansive views over the near and far hills. Almost always windy up top so worth remembering!

After the peaks it's all flat terrain and definitely more busy on a dry day. Walk the way back after the last peak if you prefer the challenge of it.
