This is the site of a fire that supposedly burnt continuously from the 1920's until the late 1930's where it was extinguished to prevent it accidentally guiding enemy bombers at the onset of World War 2.
It acted as a meeting place where disillusioned Scots, struggling with unemployment from the depression in the 20s and 30s, could meet for discussion and discourse, and perhaps just a distraction from everyday life.
it members went on to create some of the famous mountaineering clubs that helped to establish and protect Scotland's wild open areas. People such as broadcaster Tom Weir, climber Jock Nimlin, and activist David McConnell were all fire sitters at some point in time.
Following the war, was fire was once again relit during an evening of celebration and remembrance. One piece of etiquette dictated that you arrived with fuel for the fire so that the fuel was replaced as fast as it was burned. Following a particularly poignant, a young man called Daniels stood, placed a piece of wood on the fire and left quietly. This led to all of the remaining fire sitters doing the same until the fire was left to burn out quietly on its own.
