    The Heisinger Bogen bird sanctuary was established in the 1930s. Many species of birds, some of them rare, live in the nature reserve on the north bank of Lake Baldeney, including water rails, kingfishers, little grebes, cormorants and gray herons.

      The Heisinger Bogen nature reserve and bird sanctuary is a dream for bird lovers. There is a small nature reserve (NSG) along the Heisinger Bogen in the Heisingen district of Essen. There you will find, among other things, an alder forest, sycamore and hornbeam, as well as some smaller ponds with shallow water and reed zones, where birds and their nests can be observed all year round. Examples such as gray herons, cormorants, kingfishers, great crested grebes, mute swans, as well as the numerous songbirds up in the trees are just a part of the many animal species. Even red-eared slider turtles can be seen. Since this is an NSG, it is of course imperative to stay on the designated paths so as not to disturb the animals and nature.

        The Heisinger Bogen bird sanctuary is a nature reserve on the north shore of Lake Baldeney in the Heisingen district of Essen.
        It was established in the 1930s when the Baldeneysee was created and includes part of the water surface and the bank area at the southern tip of the Heisinger peninsula (the so-called Heisinger Bogen).
        The shallow water area there has a well-developed floating leaf zone and remains of alder forest, adjacent to it there is a floodplain forest flooded at regular intervals.
        A hiking trail (the Bergische Weg) leads along the shore, separated from the lake by a wood strip with alder, sycamore and hornbeam.
        The southern border line of the protected area lies in the lake and is marked there by yellow buoys and poles.
