Chester Cathedral is a must-see for any visitor to the city of Chester. Founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092, this incredible structure was subsequently rebuilt around 1250 and took 275 years to transform the building into the stunning Gothic-style building we see today.

Chester Cathedral has the most complete complex of monastic buildings in the country, including a Georgian square and series of streets, the remains of Roman barracks on Dean's Field and the largest open green spaces within the walls, popular with both locals and locals are visitors alike.

Chester Cathedral is a fully functioning church with over 20 regular services per week, ensuring the cathedral is a vibrant hub for the Chester community.

There's something going on every day at Chester Cathedral. Whether you're visiting the latest exhibition, taking the Cathedral at Height tour or touring the gardens, there's truly something for every member of the family at Chester Cathedral. (Source:chester.com/listing/chester-cathedral/)

Chester Cathedral is a Church of England cathedral and the mother church of the Diocese of Chester. It is located in the city of Chester, Cheshire, England. The cathedral, formerly the abbey church of a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint Werburgh, is dedicated to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since 1541 it has been the seat of the Bishop of Chester.

The cathedral is a listed building and is part of a heritage site that also includes the former monastic buildings to the north, which are also listed. The construction of the cathedral took place between the 10th century [3] and the early 16th century, undergoing several changes throughout history, a typical feature of English cathedrals; However, the site itself may have been used for Christian worship since Roman times. All major styles of English medieval architecture, from Norman to Perpendicular, are represented in the current building. (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester_Cathedral)

        Story

The city of Chester was already an important place in Roman times (as Castra Deviana). There is an assumption that there was already a basilica in the city at that time. A Benedictine abbey was founded in 1093, and the oldest parts of today's cathedral come from this abbey. The abbey church was not yet Chester Cathedral at this time.

In 1538, when King Henry VIII dissolved the English monasteries, the abbey was closed. Three years later, in 1541, the abbey church was made a cathedral by order of the king. While the abbey was still dedicated to St. Werburgh, Chester's patron saint, the cathedral has now been rededicated to Christ and the Virgin Mary.

Since the 19th century, the cathedral has been restored several times, and in the 20th century a free-standing tower was built next to the cathedral. In 1922, a memorial to soldiers who died in the First World War was unveiled in the cathedral. Since 1955, the cathedral and the associated monastery buildings have been classified as Grade I buildings. (Source:wikiwand.com/de/Chester_Cathedral)
