he Alexanderplatz is a square on the northeastern edge of the historic center of Berlin. The rectangular square in the Mitte district goes back to the square in front of the King's Gate and was given its current name in 1805 after the Russian Tsar Alexander I. In the Berlin vernacular he is usually just called “Alex”.
The square, which was redesigned several times, and a large part of the surrounding buildings suffered considerable damage from Allied air raids during the Second World War. In the 1960s, the East Berlin administration had the area of the square in the center of the GDR capital completely redesigned, with the exception of the Alexander and Berolina Houses. What was previously a very busy roundabout became a pedestrian zone covering an area of around eight hectares. Until 1970, on this four times larger area, among other things, were built. the Interhotel Stadt Berlin and the HO-Centrum department store, which continue to exist today as the Park Inn and Galeria Kaufhof.
