            The ruins of Bad Liebenstein consist of a core castle and a
            lower bailey in the south. The main castle was built on two reef limestone massifs separated by a fissure-like chasm, with the western part being 3-4 m higher. A wall and ditch system runs around the castle and runs out to the west. The documented sources for the castle ruins start with 1353 quite late. From the 17th century the castle gradually fell into disrepair. In the fall of 2002, dated

                  The castle was probably built as an outpost in the High Middle Ages by the Lords of Frankenstein, who lived near Bad Salzungen.
