The panel with the four letters "INRI" (also called the title of the cross), which is often seen on cross representations and attached to the longitudinal beam of the cross, is the Latin abbreviation for the words "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum". Such a plaque was then common in the Roman Empire and gave the reason for the conviction or execution.
