      The historic ramparts of Boizenburg were probably built in the 12th century. They served to protect the currently developing city on the Boize. More than 45 bridges over the moat gave the city the nickname "Little Venice of the North".

      Three centuries earlier, the Slavs had built a lowland castle with a moat, earth wall and wooden palisades in what was then the Fürstengarten to monitor the trade route from the Harz Mountains to the Baltic Sea region, which at that time led through the middle of today's city area. The ramparts, which are still visible today, were built in the 12th century and enclose the historic old town. They consist of a middle wall, which is surrounded by ditches on both sides, and an inner and outer wall. The many small half-timbered houses that were built directly on the inside of the two moats towards the city are connected to the Mittelwall by more than 45 bridges. They still characterize the cityscape today.
