One of Edinburgh’s famous seven hills, hiking up Blackford Hill provides the opportunity to see the entire capital laid out before your eyes. Like much of the city, this is ancient ground and is home to a hill fort with visible fortifications remaining. Even on a cloudy day there’s something to be said for the mystical atmosphere this hill possesses.
Rising in the south of the city, Blackford Hill can be accessed from a variety of paths but wandering through the pretty Hermitage of Braid, a verdant valley, is certainly one of the most aesthetically pleasing. Hermitage House is tucked in here too, a stunning 18th century manor.
Views of sea, city and glorious hills
A wide, grassy summit makes Blackford Hill a lovely place to plonk down upon and enjoy the views across to Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh Castle. The Firth of Forth glitters beyond the city and you can spy the North Sea to the east. Southwards, the majestic Pentland Hills light up the horizon, beckoning you to future explorations. In the fore, Braid Hills are immediately south and are a good place to expand your hike into a longer adventure.
You can hike up Blackford Hill throughout the year although tread carefully if snow and ice are about as some trails can get slippery. Whilst views are outstanding on clear days, Edinburgh experiences its fair share of mist, drizzle and cloud. Still, thanks to the proximity of other hills and the city itself, you’ll always see something intriguing.
Accommodation and food come in every possible variety in this vibrant capital city, much within walking distance of Blackford Hill.
