The Bodetal is probably the most beautiful valley in the Harz and is also one of the most beautiful gorges in Germany. In some places it is also referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Harz Mountains. The granite rocks rise up to 280 m to the right and left of the river Bode. This rises on the Brocken and paves an impressive path through granite and stone. The many rocks, smoothed by the raging water, invite you to take a break and cool off your hot feet in many places.

A hike through the Bodetal is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Harz Mountains. Unfortunately, others know that too. Therefore you have to be prepared for a lot of public traffic when hiking through the Bodeschlucht. The 9 kilometer hike from Thale to Treseburg is best to start early in the morning, then it is less busy. The way back can be covered by bus.

In contrast, our Bode Valley, which only formed in its present form during the Ice Age, is almost virginal at approximately 450,000 years old.

The Bode Valley, in the geographical sense, refers to the area of the Bode River, where the Kalte and Warme Bode Rivers converge, until it emerges from the Harz Mountains in Thale. In a narrower sense, however, it refers to the section between Treseburg and Thale. The river, which originates in the Brocken massif, has carved its way into the hard Ramberg granite from Wendefurth onward over the millennia. The gorge gradually becomes deeper and wider towards Thale. While it is about 140 meters deep at Treseburg, it is already over 280 meters deep at the exit from the mountains near Thale.
