The dog's back is 931.4 m above sea level. NHN, high mountain on the Albtrauf of the southwestern Swabian Alb near Bisingen in the Zollernalb district of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. It is surrounded by the following cities and communities (starting clockwise from the north): Bisingen (districts Bisingen and Thanheim), Albstadt (district Pfeffingen), Balingen (districts Zillhausen, Streichen, Heselwangen and Engstlatt).
The Hundsrück mountain is an excellent vantage point: from its steep drop you can see the nearby Hohenzollern Castle and the Albtrauf to the Dreifürstenstein eastwards, in the north you overlook the Alb foreland and to the west the view extends over the Balinger Mountains with the Plettenberg to the Black Forest.
On August 26, 1972, a spectacular landslide occurred as a result of heavy rainfall, in which the saddle between Hundsücken and Irrenberg slid down over a length of 700 meters on the north side. As a result of repeated reactivations, the area of the landslide has expanded from originally around 20 hectares to now over 36 hectares. The largest nature reserve in the Zollernalb district is located at this point and for the greater part to the south of the saddle. The 128 hectare site Irrenberg-Hundsücken is characterized by an extraordinary variety of biotope types. For example, on the barren soils of the wooden meadows on the Irrenberg, so-called lean lime lawns with a rarely encountered flora and fauna have developed.
