The Church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo de Altea is the main (but not the only) religious building in the town. You will find it in the Plaza de la Iglesia, in the old town, an area full of charm and history. The church is surrounded by white houses, craft shops and delicious bars and restaurants. In addition, a few meters away you will come across a viewpoint from which you can observe the coastal area of Altea and the immensity of the sea.

The origin of this church is a parish from the beginning of the 16th century. However, the building as we know it now was built between 1900 and 1910, with a Neo-Baroque architectural style that is maintained today, despite some slight touch-ups at the end of the 20th century.

Let's dive into history. On the same site, a small single-nave church was completed in 1617, in the Renaissance style. Later, the construction of an additional chapel is proposed and in 1854 it was inaugurated with the name Chapel of the Holy Christ of Altea. This chapel will play a strong role in the future project of the current church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo.
In 1901, thanks to the efforts of the priest D. Juan Bautista Cremades, a Council was created for the construction of the new church in Altea. In the same year, the demolition of the old church begins. The new church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo consists of a single nave covered with a vault, with arches on the sides to let in the light from the built-in windows on both sides and with internal buttresses and side chapels. The new Church rises on the traces of the old one, albeit with larger dimensions because its perimeter extends laterally to the south. The plan is designed to make the transept coincide with the axis of the pre-existing Chapel of the Holy Christ which will now become the communion chapel of the new church. The facade has a double bell tower with a square base, of which only the left one rises. The exterior architecture of the new church is characterized by its masonry with two-tone cross-stitch bonding, very typical of its time.
The Church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo is one of the must see places if you are planning a trip to Altea.
