The place was first mentioned in documents in 1158 and received in 1293 the city rights. In 1320 the county Lüchow passed into the possession of the house Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Lüchow Castle served her as a widow's residence for several years (1496-1504). 1537 Lüchow was plagued by the plague. In 1589, the city burned down for the most part. In 1608 a conflagration put the largest part of the city Lüchow in ashes.
