The Peacock Island is a special natural monument in Berlin. Uninhabited for a long time, King Friedrich Wilhelm II had the small castle built at the southern end of the island at the end of the 18th century. A few years later, the great garden artist Peter Joseph Lenné designed the island's landscape garden. He was very careful in doing so in order to preserve the unique character of the island with its ancient oaks and beeches. Today the castle and garden are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On your long walks on the island, you can visit the beautiful garden and the small castle as well as the old dairy. In addition to the eponymous, free-living peacocks, you will meet numerous other birds on the island and in summer the gardeners are supported in maintaining the landscape by sheep and water buffalo.

In 1824/1825 Schinkel expanded the Kavaliershaus, which had existed since 1804. The king had the court marshal's office in Danzig buy the late Gothic Schlieffhaus from 1520, which was threatened with demolition. It was transported in numbered individual parts via the Baltic Sea and Oder to the Pfaueninsel. The patrician house had supposedly been in Nuremberg since 1360 and was rebuilt in Gdansk in 1480. Schinkel now connected it with the old gentleman's house, which could no longer accommodate the occasional guests. The “Schweizerhaus” was built in 1829/1830, also based on Schinkel's designs, and since 1829 there has been a sandstone portico in sight of the dairy in memory of Queen Luise, which was very likely designed by Schinkel. It is the original column front of your mausoleum from 1810 from the Charlottenburg Palace Park, which was subsequently redesigned from the harder material granite.

Island with free-roaming peacocks, about every 20 minutes, the ferry passes passers-by, the trip costs 4 euros.
The sprawling island invites you for a walk, after which we have discovered a flock of sheep, two castles, a rose garden and stables. The kids liked it.
There are two cafes to take a break.

The perfect place for a romantic getaway: a white castle on an island. And an idyllic park where peacocks hit their wheels.

"Like a fairy tale, a picture from my childhood rises before me: A castle, peacocks sitting on a high pole or hitting a wheel, fountains, overshadowed meadows, winding paths that lead everywhere and nowhere ..." - that's how Theodor Fontane once swarmed the peacock island.

Even today, the island with the white castle may not be missing from any list of romantic places in Berlin. A small summer castle on an island with an idyllic park where peacocks take a walk - what could be more romantic?
Little wonder then is that the castle was built as a love nest for a king and his mistress.

A description of clockwise circumnavigation of the peacock island may look like this. From the southern ferry terminal, the path leads past the Kastellans apartment to a garden that opens to the Pfaueninsel castle. From there there is a view of peacocks and the Havel. Afterwards, the circular path to the former Palm House opens, the floor plan of which is marked only by four stone pillars. Within this marker, various foliage plants are still cultivated.
This is followed by the Parschenkesselbucht with a wide reed belt and wild waterfowl. It goes to the Dutch house from the year 1802, which is located in the northern part of the island and serves as a stable for cattle.
On the way back, the dairy is passed through in the form of an artificial ruin of a medieval abbey. From here a direct line of sight to the Luisentempel in form of a Greek temple is kept free. Between Meierei and Luisentempel the black shaggy cattle graze in a wetland. The trail continues along a grove with large acorns reproduced in stone and the terrain of alchemist Johannes Kunckel, who invented the ruby-red glass.

After passing two bridges, the "Beelitzer Jagdschirm", located directly on the shore, is reached, a bark-covered shelter in the dimensions of a large hunting lodge. Out of his protection, the royal hunting dogs killed the waterfowl. In the sense of "nature bondage" this was already a clear departure from the hunt. The Fregattenhafen, also on the shore, is a building for the protection of the small-scale frigate named Royal Louise. Slightly uphill, the path touches the aviaries, nursery and rose garden and leads back to the ferry terminal. The aviaries are mainly used to protect the young peacocks, so they do not fall victim to foxes.

After the short break, I continue towards the Kavaliershaus. It was used to accommodate guests. Its architecture is reminiscent of an English country house and was therefore often used as an outdoor backdrop for filming. Many scenes from the Alfred Hitchcock films were filmed here.

The first uses of the Peacock Island date back to the Wends, as excavations in 1843 showed. It was given the name Kaninchenwerder in the 17th century, when the great elector ran a rabbit farm on it. In fact, the official name Pfau Werder could already be found in old documents at that time.

A bit of history and I'll keep it short: King Friedrich Wilhelm II loves the horn player's daughter, but is not allowed to marry her because of class nonsense. The two of them turn the island into their love nest. I think it's really great what they have created there. The early buildings, the castle and the dairy, were built as functional structures that give the appearance of a ruin. The dairy is a dilapidated Gothic chapel, but in reality it was the main building of a decorative farm, with dairy cattle, sheep and horses.

The Pfaueninsel can be reached from the western city center by bus line 218 from the Theodor-Heuss-Platz underground station through the Grunewald and then via the Wannsee S-Bahn station.
