A stream that flows in two directions? That's what you get in Bielefeld! The Ems-Lutter and Weser-Lutter rivers originate at the Lutter spring in the Bielefeld district of Brackwede. The Lutter Valley is a very natural green belt here.

Originally, the Lutter springs flowed southwest toward the Ems. Due to complaints from mill owners, tanners, brewers, and other tradespeople about the lack of water in Bielefeld, part of the springs were artificially diverted northeast in 1452, so that they flowed through Bielefeld's city center. Today, water management refers to the Ems-Lutter and the Weser-Lutter. The Lutter became increasingly polluted by domestic and factory wastewater, so that around 1910, the Lutter was piped in the city center. Thanks to the association pro Lutter e.V., sections of the Lutter in the city center have been exposed again since 2004, offering beautiful places to meet friends, relax and enjoy the cool water in the Park of Human Rights and on Ravensberger Straße.
