The Chatzenstrick / Katzenstrick has nothing to do with a cat (Swiss German: Chatz) or with a rope. The first part of the word goes back to a farmer named Kätzi (also written Chätzi) who worked this area. The second part of the word comes from strokes. This is a field name (Old High German Strih = stripe, district, Middle High German dash = land area). The original name was therefore: Chätzi's strokes, which means something like: the country of the Chätzi.

The pilgrimage route from Lucerne to the pilgrimage site of Einsiedeln used to lead over the cat rope, which gave it the nickname cat stretcher.

To the west of the village of Einsiedeln is the Katzenstrick. The pass is at around 1100 m above sea level and connects the village of Einsiedeln with the Altmatt between Biberbrugg and Rothenthurm. There used to be a restaurant and art gallery here, completely renovated in spring 2019, some of them private apartments. Maybe there is a restaurant in a great location again!
