      Historical interpretation:
The Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery was founded in September 1944 and served as a temporary cemetery for the fallen of the fighting during the winter of 1944-45 in Belgium and Germany. These were the Battle of Aachen, the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge (also called the Battle of the Bulge).
In March 1945, 17,000 Americans, 191 Allies and 10,300 Germans were buried at the Henri-Chapelle Cemetery.
After the war, the German and Allied victims were transferred to other places. About 60% of the American war dead were repatriated at the wishes of their relatives. After the reconstruction, the new and permanent American Cemetery and Monument was inaugurated by General Eisenhower in 1960.
The cemetery is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), an agency of the US government. However, the land is NOT considered US territory.

As a memorial to the many war dead, such places - sometimes referred to as "cemeteries of honor" - are still very important today. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said..." says the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke's Gospel, Chapter 2, Verse 29). However, the many people buried here did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and an inhuman tyranny.

The most important and everlasting function of military or honorary cemeteries or war graves is therefore to remember this and to remind each generation anew of the need to maintain lasting peace.

The American cemetery and memorial site of Henri-Chapelle contains the remains of 7,987 American military casualties, most of whom lost their lives during the advance of the American forces into Germany. Their gravestones stand in gentle arcs over a wide green lawn that slopes gently downhill. Across the road at the cemetery you have beautiful views over the rolling countryside of Herve that was once a battlefield.

On the east side is the long colonnade that, together with the chapel and the map room, forms the monument that overlooks the cemetery.

The cemetery is of great military historical importance because it commemorates fallen Americans from two major campaigns. The first offensive was the advance of the American First Army in September 1944 through northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg into Germany and the second is known as the Battle of the Bulge. The cemetery, which covers around 23 hectares, was established as a war cemetery in September 1944 by the 1st US Infantry Division of the 1st US Army. The cemetery and memorial were completed in 1960 and the ceremonial inauguration took place on July 9 of the same year.

The memorial includes the chapel (north side) and the combined visitor/museum building (south side), which are connected by a colonnade of 12 pairs of rectangular pylons. To the east of the colonnade is a large terrace with paths leading down to the burial ground. The outside of the memorial is made of Massangins limestone from the Côte d'Or in France. The colonnade, chapel and museum are paved with cobblestones made of Saint Gotthard granite.

During the Battle of the Bulge, this area was overrun by enemy German troops, so this site became an advanced defense post. The soldiers formerly buried in the makeshift cemeteries at Fosse (near Namur, Belgium) and Foy (near Bastogne, Belgium) have found their final resting place here, in this military cemetery.
