The lake was created between 1972 and 1976 as the core area of the municipal Oberrabenstein Local Recreation Center and opened as a swimming lake with rowing facilities in 1976. The Oberrabenstein Local Recreation Center included a campsite, a nudist pool with a sauna, and a game reserve with horseback riding and driving facilities. After reunification, the local recreation center was dissolved as a municipal operation, and the individual areas were incorporated into other municipal operations or privatized.
