                                        Stein Castle is a partly late Romanesque castle complex in the wildly romantic Zwickauer Muldetal. Built around 1200, the former moated castle protected the Hartenstein estate and secured the river crossing. The palace, courtyard, chapel and keep were protected by double curtain walls, a moat and a rampart. From the upper courtyard and the battlement you can enjoy unique views over the castle complex and the Hartenstein Forest. The lower castle is younger, it was added in the middle of the 15th century.

Below it, about halfway up, like a robber baron's nest, is the cave or rock castle, while the castle, which is still inhabited today, houses a private high school. Every observer will certainly be fascinated by the defiant, gloomy exterior of the cave castle, the largest and best preserved of its kind in Germany. The figure of Heinz vom Stein is inseparably linked to the gloomy cave castle. The gruesome story of the robber baron and girl kidnapper “Heinz vom Stein dem Wilden” was first written by Lorenz Hübner in 1783 as a “patriotic tragedy”.
