The Budge Palace - where the fairies and muses are at work ...
A piano melody can be heard from the open windows, scraps of arias permeate the air, professionals and students are standing in the courtyard - the Budge Palais is a haven for the muses. It almost seems as if three good fairies are distributing their gifts and inspiration among the student artists.
Today the building is used by the University of Music and Theater. With its 50 rooms, 20 bathrooms and the splendid Hall of Mirrors, the Budge Palace was probably the most magnificent residence on the Alster at the turn of the century. Its builder, Henry Budge, had earned his fortune as a banker in the United States. In 1903 he and his wife Emma moved to their hometown of Hamburg. Emma especially loved art. The Jewish couple donated a fortune to the Hanseatic City, among other things for the university. After the death of her husband, Emma decreed that the palace should become Hamburg property for "charitable purposes". But things turned out differently. The Nazis nailed the palace for a ridiculous price.
